Your JST contains courses recommended by the American Council on Education (ACE). The University of Arizona uses ACE recommendations and university transferability guidelines to assess credit for U.S. military service and training for undergraduate students. The University of Arizona will accept up to 30 units of ACE-recommended military credit as transfer work toward a bachelor’s degree. Explore our online Transfer Credit Guide. For experiences not listed in the Transfer Credit Guide, consult with your academic advisor.

Earn Credit for Basic Training

In addition to ACE-recommended courses, credit can be received for basic training. Recruit or basic training on JST and CCAF transcripts is awarded credit based on time in service (i.e., consecutive months of active duty in the armed forces, terminated under honorable conditions):

  • 1 year or more: 8 units
  • 9 months: 6 units
  • 6 months: 4 units
  • 3 months: 2 units
  • Less than 3 months: no credit

Earn Credit for Foreign Language & Other Skills

  1. Second language proficiency credit will be awarded for languages completed through the Defense Language Institute (DLI).
  2. Spanish, French and German proficiency can be assessed through the College Level Examination Program (CLEP). CLEP provides college credit based on test scores; active duty military members may have access to one free test attempt. Your Spanish, French, German, Russian and Latin can also be assessed through a proctored exam from the College of Humanities.
  3. If you have experience with any other language not listed above, we can still assess these experiences for proficiency or through our Critical Languages Program.

The University of Arizona accepts test credit from CLEP and DSST. With preparation, you may be able to pass a test that can award you additional college credit for other skills and knowledge you have gained from your time in the military.

$250per credit
