- SIE students are expected to have undergraduate training in Mathematics, Physics, Computing (CS/Java), and mathematical modeling.
- At least four semesters of mathematics, beginning with a two-semester sequence in calculus (i.e, Calc I, Calc II, Vector Calculus, and Differential Equations)
- Linear Algebra may be required for elective courses, depending on student selection (e.g., SIE 550, SIE 540).
- At least 3 semesters of calculus-based physics and general engineering science (i.e., Introductory Mechanics and Intro to ElectroMagnetism).
- At least one semester of computing (i.e., an introductory course using a high-level language such as Java, C++, C#, Visual Basic, or C).
