The online Graduate Certificate in Mineral Processing and Extractive Metallurgy will prepare you to employ state-of-the-art methods to harvest the metals and materials we depend on.
The curriculum, built and led by influential figures in the mining industry alongside the University of Arizona’s accomplished faculty, examines mineral extraction and refinement from scientific and economics-oriented perspectives. Available prerequisite courses make this program a perfect fit for practicing engineers and those looking to make a career change. The program also benefits professionals in a related field who would like to learn more about mineral processing and extractive metallurgy. Should you decide to pursue the Master of Engineering in Mining and Geological Engineering after graduation or complete both programs concurrently, all 15 units taken in this certificate program can be transferred.
Arizona leads the US in the value of non-fuel mineral production, serving as the top source of copper and a major producer of other minerals like crude perlite, molybdenum, and silver. The University of Arizona Department of Mining and Geological Engineering is the state’s only provider of university-level educational and research programs in engineering minerals and nonrenewable resources. Faculty is instrumental in the technological and scientific breakthroughs shaping the future of mining and geological engineering.
Mineral extraction and processing professionals must account for the mining industry's environmental impact and apply efficient processes for working with low-grade and complex ores. As a graduate of this program, you have the potential to lead the responsible use of resources, developing and implementing low-waste methods to process minerals efficiently and sustainably.
The background coursework we look for:
- 3 semesters of calculus
- 1-2 semesters of physics (depending on the emphasis area), statics (for some emphasis areas strength of materials and mechanics of fluids)
- A basic understanding of geologic principles
*Residents of some U.S. Territories may not be eligible. Please see our Eligibility & State Authorization page for more information.
